Responsible Breeding Through Research and Innovation

In the newest edition of our online magazine, we showcase how innovation is transforming pig breeding. Anchored in science, powered by technology and focused on real-world impact.

By: Eli Grindflek, Research Director

Our mission is clear: breed pigs that thrive in tomorrow’s farming environments, where climate resilience, animal welfare, health and economic sustainability are non-negotiable.

We continue to push the boundaries of accurate genetic selection. Our genomic toolbox is more powerful than ever and includes enormous numbers of genotyped individuals, breed-specific reference genomes, structural variant mapping, customized SNPs and gene editing for functional gene detection. Genomics helps us uncover hidden risks and opportunities, allowing us to balance productivity with long-term viability.

However, accurate selection starts with capturing the right traits. Using AI and advanced technology, we are breaking new ground when it comes to health, robustness and welfare – trait groups that have traditionally been hard to measure due to complexity and a high variety in environmental conditions and complexity. For example, AI-powered computer vision in free-farrowing systems helps us identify new maternal traits, boosting welfare and productivity. We use CT scans and AI to analyze pigs’ internal anatomy, selecting traits that are linked to robustness, longevity and survival. Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) helps us breed pigs that digest protein more efficiently, which cuts nitrogen waste and enables flexible, local feed strategies.

Smart data gathered from challenging environments allows us to select pigs that are genetically better in handling diseases, reducing the need for medical interventions and improving welfare.

We hope this magazine provides a glimpse into the passion and purpose behind our work. Thank you for joining us on the journey towards a more sustainable and responsible future in pig breeding.
