Topigs Norsvin tests 3D scanning technology for conformation scoring
Topigs Norsvin is testing 3D scanning technology as an option for scoring the conformation of live pigs. In the test infrared 3D photos of the live pig are taken that can processed by special software to determine the pig’s conformation. The accuracy and reliability of the technology will be determined by dissecting scanned pigs to calculate the relation between the information of the scan and the actual composition and conformation of the pigs. In the test the focus is on the primal values and total carcass value of the pigs.
The technology of infrared 3D scanning is an option that can be positioned between the very accurate but complicated and expensive technology of CT scanning and the now most commonly used of Ultrasound Live Muscle Scanning or LMS. LMS is widely used at Topigs Norsvin’s breeding farms worldwide. The more accurate 3D scanning will contribute to a better selection accuracy and will increase the genetic progress of Topigs Norsvin genetics for carcass confirmation traits. This will lead to more added value for our customers.
