We Are Topigs Norsvin

Driving progress in pigs for sustainable pork production

For over a century, Topigs Norsvin has been driving progress in pig genetics for sustainable pork production. As a farmer-owned cooperative, we have a long term horizon as we breed for generations to come.

From our nucleus breeding facilities to customers worldwide, we transform science into solutions that help farmers thrive with efficient, resilient and easy-to manage pigs to produce responsible pork for consumers. This is more than genetics, it's future-forward thinking.

Our Approach
The history of Topigs Norsvin dates back to 1922

More than 100 years of driving progress in pigs

The story of Topigs Norsvin starts in 1922 when Dutch pig farmers establish a cooperative to improve pig breeding. An initiative that was followed by many others. In the meantime, Norwegian farmers start a cooperative under the name Norsvin to jointly operate an AI station - growing into a nationwide pig breeding organization.

Many decades later in the 1980s some Dutch cooperatives unite their organizations under one breeding program - Topigs.

After further consolidation in the Netherlands, Topigs and Norsvin come together in 2014 to create a global leading player.

History
Dick Hordijk - CEO

Genetic progress is key to feeding a growing world. Thirty percent of the growth in global food production comes from advances in animal genetics, and at Topigs Norsvin, we continue to make a meaningful contribution.

Topigs Norsvin is a farmer-owned cooperative

Topigs and Norsvin are both cooperatives, representing hundreds of pig farmers who are the owners. Jointly the two cooperatives own Topigs Norsvin, which operates as a farmer-owned cooperative with a two-tier governance model:

  • Supervisory Board
  • Board of Directors

The cooperative structure has clear advantages

Topigs Norsvin’s cooperative structure is different in many ways: it is guided by farmers and focused on the long term, not outside investors or short-term profit, genetic gains are returned to farmer-owners, and decisions are made by people who depend on the genetics for their own success.

This cooperative mindset has enabled large investments over the last decade in breeding facilities and program, and not without results.
